Krystalak is a playable monster in the Atari Godzilla Trilogy, appearing in "Godzilla: Unleashed". He is a member of the Mutants faction recently formed by the heightened crystal activity.

An original creation by Pipeworks Software, he was conceived as a direct extension of "Godzilla: Unleashed"'s storyline.

Biography[]

Krystalak is a semi-sentient crystal organism, spawned by the same meteor shower that threatens to rip the earth apart. Born from the crystals, Krystalak seeks to bring all of their energies together to make himself into the ultimate monster. Like the crystals that spawned him, Krystalak is quite resistant to most forms of energy weapons, forcing opponents to fight him tooth & claw. Krystalak can expel crystal shards in a solid stream, bludgeoning foes from a distance. Krystalak can also overload his crystal heart - sacrificing his own physical integrity to damage everything nearby. With no ties to any existing alien or terrestrial powers, Krystalak seeks power at any cost.

Behind the Scenes[]

The inclusion of original creations in "Godzilla: Unleashed" was first revealed by IGN on February 21st, 2007, which confirmed two would feature in the game without further information. The Godzilla Unleashed New Monster Vote, held at IGN, was unveiled in March to determine one of the original monsters to feature, in the title, but the other original monster was nowhere to be found.

On July 10th, 2007, creative director Mark Crowe first mentioned Krystalak as the other original monster briefly in an interview with Gaming Nexus.

The character was formally revealed in an IGN Creature Reveal on July 19th, 2007, alongside Destoroyah and Mothra, and all three monsters were added to the official website the same day, confirming Krystalak's alignment as a mutant.

In August 2007, a GameSpot Developer Diary by Shelby Wills was released that focused exclusively on the development of the character, discussing Pipeworks Software's desire to create a unique, crystal-themed monster to tie into the game's storyline, the art design process that lead to the character and his unique sounds, with multiple comparisons to a cat.[1]

Krystalak was met with a mixed reception among fans at first, as many disliked the game including original creations. Some felt Krystalak's fast nature and the cat-like elements made him stand out among Toho's classic creatures, while others felt he lacked the 'man-in-a-suit' charm. The crystal theme also proved a topic of discussion, with both fans of the character and detractors jokingly referring to him as the "Son of SpaceGodzilla".

Trivia[]

  • Krystalak's full set of sounds includes six different grunts, a charge-up sound, nine different growls, two kinds of "oof" sounds, six shouts, and two roars. Wild cats as well as bears were primary sources of reference.[1]
